A little progress each day adds up to big results. Find out 5 things you can do to Go Red For Women today as you embark on your fitness journey. #GoRedGetFitIn the summer of 2015, I decided to make a more conscious effort to get fit and stay fit. When I shared my workout journey with those around me, I often got the comment, “you’re skinny. You don’t need to work out.” However, being skinny does not mean you’re fit or healthy.

I have partnered with American Heart Association (AHA) on the #GoRedGetFit campaign to share with you 5 things you can do to keep an active and healthy lifestyle. Go Red for Women is the American Heart Association’s national movement to end heart disease (and stroke) in women.

If I had the choice, I’d rather be do something else than workout. The beginning was the hardest for me. I had actually started working out during my last year of pharmacy school. At the time, I was on top of it. But when I moved 2,800 miles from Wyoming to Alaska to start my career, working out became less of a priority.

After a year counseling and dispensing medications to patients across all ages suffering from heart disease, I knew that I had to get back on track. Did you know that heart disease is the number one cause of death in the US? The stats don’t lie! Each year, 1 in 3 women die of heart disease and stroke. Together we can change that because 80 percent of cardiac events can be prevented.

Here are 5 things you can do to #GoRedGetFit:

  1. Take 10,000 steps a day – If your job requires you to be on your feet throughout the day, you can easily achieve this goal. To improve overall heart health, aim to exercise at least thirty minutes a day, five times a week (AHA physical activity recommendations). I recently invested in a smart fitness tracker and cannot recommend it highly enough records. It even has hourly “get moving” reminders, built-in workout videos, and much more.A little progress each day adds up to big results. 2. Find a workout partner – Friends that do fitness challenges together, stay healthy together! Peer support serves as motivation to keep striving to stay fit. Pharmacy school would have been more difficult for me if I did not have a study partner to hold each other accountable. A barrier to being fit and healthy is simply not having the guidance and support. A little progress each day adds up to big results. 3. Know your numbers – Get your cholesterol checked and talk to your doctor about your numbers. Cholesterol by itself is not bad because we need it in our bodies. Find out what cholesterol is and how too much of it can contribute to clogged arteries and cardiovascular risk. A little progress each day adds up to big results. 5. Practice makes per-fit! – We all know that it takes a while to turn a behavior into a habit. Continuous practice and improvement on your fitness routine will eventually make it a core aspect of your life. The #GoRedGetFit challenge lasts approximately 12-weeks for this reason.A little progress each day adds up to big results. Most importantly, don’t give up! We all have our bad days. Remember, doing something is better than doing nothing. “Pep Your Step for Good”

  1. You are so right when you say being skinny does not mean you are fit. As a nurse I know this well. I used to be so good at exercising and then 12 years ago my son died in an accident. I quit exercising and basically quit living. After all this time I decided to work out again a few months ago. I know it will help me health wise and it will make me feel much better. I feel so good after exercising and it helps with my anxiety and depression. Keep up the good work. You look awesome

    1. Thank you so much for sharing about your experience, Linda. I can’t imagine the pain you went through. Glad to hear that working out makes you feel good. Keep at it lady! And thanks for stopping by.
