The best skincare products for women of color has always been of interest to me. As the last of seven girls, I watched my sisters and mother use certain products over and over again. Just like these amazing melanin women, I fell in love with certain skincare tools and have become part of my skincare routine.

Amazon, Sephora, and Nordstrom are my go-to places for all things beauty. Nordstrom and Amazon Prime (try it for free!) offer free and fast shipping, a feature I appreciate now that I literally live off-grid i.e. Alaska. This post is a collection of my holy grail skincare products that I believe every woman, particularly black women should use (or at try).

Petroleum Jelly – I grew up using Vaseline line of products. In fact, my family referred to lotions as “Vaseline” just like most people call lip balm “Chapstick”. This product has been in our household for generations and I even know some other colored ladies who only use Vaseline.

Petroleum jelly gets rid of ashy skin just as fast as they appear and it is honestly one of the best products for a well-moistened skin. Before I learned about the thing called “lip balm” my sisters gave me a small tube of Vaseline jelly to apply on my lips to avoid getting dry, cracked lips especially during dry season.

If you want radiantly glowing skin, you need this product. Now an adult, I use Vaseline Intensive Care Lotion which I mix with Johnson’s Baby Oil With Aloe Vera & Vitamin E.

Baby oil – Although I love petroleum jelly, I find myself partially biased to baby oil. For one, this product does not leave you with a sticky residue. It can also be easily mixed with other skincare products because it comes as a liquid.

In the heart of winter, I always reach for my baby oil which I mix with Vaseline lotion to give me better shine and moistened skin. I lived in Wyoming for 6 years before moving to Alaska and found that this works magic. Seriously every black woman needs this product.

Black Soap – Every woman of color is probably familiar with black soap. My first encounter with black soap was a Home & Economics course project that required students to make this product from scratch. Since then, I’ve been intrigued by the wonderful things this product does.

I’ve read reviews of women of all races giving high praises to this product. If you have a problem skin, particularly those with oily skin or acne, you need to give this product a try before investing in more expensive products. Seriously, your life will never be the same!

Facial Exfoliator – Your skin is a delicate organ and as such, extra needs to be taken to keep it healthy. There is also a high turnover of dead cells that happens every day that if not removed, can clog your pores and cause breakout.

You need an exfoliator that will remove dead skin leaving you with soft, moistened skin. I was introduced to Olay ProX Advanced Cleansing System by my twin sister. This exfoliator is unrivaled by any other in price and functionality.

It reaches deep to remove hard to reach makeup that makeup removers are unable to remove. I always love the way my face feels after using this product. Exfoliating should be part of your skincare regimen if you experience frequent breakouts.

Tinted moisturizer with SPF – I am a die-hard fan of this tinted moisturizer. It is great for oily (and combination) skin which is a problem a lot of us colored women experience on the daily.

It also comes with a good dose of SPF 20, an absolute necessity for all skin types – dark skin included! I’ve found that most sunscreens and tinted moisturizer are made for those with lighter skin tone. However, I’ve had the most success with this tinted moisturizer from Laura Mercier.

I have been using the color shade Walnut for the past few years. Because it is a tinted moisturizer, the light coverage evens out your skin in a natural-looking way.

Mud Mask – Mud masks are all the rave right now and that’s a good thing. They help clarify and tighten the skin. I particularly like the Shea Moisture African Black Soap Clarifying Mud Mask because it contains a potent blend of African black soap, tamarind extract, and tea tree oil. It’ll fight off blemish and tighten your skin keeping it healthy.

Skin Brightening Kit – Black women are particularly prone to hyperpigmentation. Blemishes from breakout and underarm scarring from ingrown hair leave affected areas of the skin hyperpigmented.

One of the safest and effective brightening systems I have come across is Ole Henriksen Power Bright Treatment. The 3-step kit reduces wrinkles and fine lines and diminishes the appearance of hyperpigmentation and sun damage.

Epilator – If you’ve tried everything under the sun to get rid of ingrown hair, you’d love this product. Ingrown hair was one of my biggest skincare concerns until I came across this epilator.

Shaving sticks aggravated the problem while shaving gels/foams produced less than desirable results. Professional waxing was ok but they cost a lot and were inconvenient. This product is the best hair care invention I’ve come across.

I don’t remember the last time I had one strand of ingrown hair! I am currently using Panasonic ES-ED90-P Wet/Dry Epilator which I’ve had for the past 2 years.

Pumice Stone – Are your feet looking less than glorious? I highly recommend this black natural earth lava. I use a pumice stone, my mother does, and her mother does too. It is one of those skincare hacks that African mothers passed on to their daughters before spas were a thing.

This stone exfoliates dead cells from high friction areas like the feet, elbows, and hands. All you have to do is soak your feet in water and gently rub this tool on affected areas to remove dead skin and calluses.

This stone has a natural black color and is free from impurities. The results you get rival that of an expensive pedicure treatment at a spa.

I use almost every product in this blog post.
Black soap is my holy grail skincare product especially since I have oily acne prone skin.
It addresses my skin issues, plus it’s so cheap ?
