Is Shein Legit? A Must-Read Shein Review | My Experience

I decided to make this disclaimer clear at the beginning of this post because I’ve seen a few Shein reviews written by people who were compensated by or partnered with Shein.
This is not to say that their reviews are biased. But want to clear up any conflict of interest.
Let’s address the elephant in the room!🐘
IS SHEIN LEGIT?
So, is Shein legit? The short answer to your question is YES. But some of their practices can come off as unconventional (and suspicious). Read the rest of this post to get the full scoop.
For example, US customers get a free return on their first order postmarked within 35 days of placing an order (read it here). But the free return policy does not account for how long it takes for your order to arrive at your doorstep, which can be weeks!
Unlike many U.S. stores where I am accustomed to shopping, you get free shipping and, a lot of times, free returns on your order.
WHAT IS SHEIN CLOTHING?
As someone who has shopped at Shein over the years, I can’t believe I finally sat down to write this post. I know many of my readers are fashionistas on a very tight budget.
And websites like Shein, Romwe, Oasap (now defunct), and Choies offer irresistible, stunning pieces that sound too good to be true.
Yup, I have read the nightmarish stories and even seen Shein’s Better Business Bureau (BBB) reviews – they’re not even accredited. The ratings are far from encouraging, yet you see these clothes on every blogger and budget-fashionista.
However, there’s a je ne sais quoi about Shein that keeps drawing shoppers to their website (myself included!).
Guess what? Amazon Fashion now carries over 500 SheIn products. You can now try, return or exchange SheIn clothing you’re not in love with.

Has anyone ever shopped from Shein (SheInside)? What is SheIn return policy?
Well, you came to the right place.
This post is my honest opinion, experience, and photos to your question as a consumer like you. I discovered Shein while I was in college a few years ago. Over the years, I’ve spent my dime shopping at stores like Shein.
Ready? Let’s get started!
WHERE DOES SHEIN SHIP FROM?
Shein is based in China. My last order shipped from Hong Kong. I received free Express Shipping on my purchase for spending over $100.
If you dig a little deeper, you will find this address for Shein:

That’s it! It’s just an address, but most of your orders will come from Asia if they are unavailable in their U.S. warehouse. Many international businesses do the same thing (tax benefit, customer trust, etc).
I also applied a Shein coupon code and $0.99 in points, which lowered my order to $99. My package arrived in less than one week.
If you’re in a hurry to get your package on time, I recommend you upgrade to Express Shipping ($12.90 to the US). Alternatively, buy more than $100 worth of items to get free Express Shipping.
WHAT IS SHEIN RETURN POLICY?
So you received your order from Shein and decided that you’re not in love with the clothes. What are your options for returning the items and getting your money back?
Well, it’ll surprise you to know that unless you paid shipping insurance, you’re responsible for the return cost.
I’ve never paid for shipping insurance. I donate or give out any Shein clothes I’m not in love with.
I figured that since the clothes were already so inexpensive, I was better off donating the products than jumping through hoops to get a refund. It’s just not worth my time. Here’s a link to Shein’s return policy.
Many customers have complained bitterly about never getting a refund, even after covering the cost of sending the package back. You can read the reviews here.
So you’ve read the reviews about Shein, but you can’t resist ordering that item you’ve had your eyes on.
Here are a few shopping tips to keep in mind while shopping on Shein.com.
TIPS ON BUYING SHEIN CLOTHING
- Only get pieces with reviews, so you have a good idea of what other customers think about it. Shein clothing always looks perfect on the models (they have a business to run!). You can make a better decision when you see the same piece on an actual customer.
- Always double-check Shein sizing measurement of each item. Just because an article is listed in standard XS-XL does not mean you should get your regular size. Shein clothing typically runs small so be aware of your measurement so you can size up (or down) as needed.
- Your first time, second time, or tenth time shopping at Shein? Look for a Shein coupon code to reduce the cost of your order. I saved 10% off my $100+ order with code AFE10. Shein routinely offers significant discounts, which you can find listed on their website. You can try this Shein coupon code to save $$: $10 off any order of $59+ -ROUND2.
- Shein is an excellent destination if you’re looking to fill in your closet with newer and affordable styles (like faux suede, ruffle sleeves, peplum dresses, and off-shoulder tops). - I wouldn’t recommend Shein for wardrobe staples or classic pieces you intend to wear for years to come. Of course, there are a few exceptions. But generally speaking, Shein is a one-stop shop for fast fashion.
- As the saying goes, “you get what you pay for.” Do not expect high-quality fabric from Shein. However, I have found a few keepers.
A REVIEW OF THE SHEIN DRESSES I RECENTLY BOUGHT
I placed my order on June 16th, and it arrived on June 21. You get FREE and fast Express shipping if your Shein order is $100 or more.
Don’t get too excited, though. I live in Alaska, and free Express Shipping was unavailable for my location.
Based on my previous experience shopping and shipping my order to Alaska, I would have received my package via standard shipping anywhere between 2-4 weeks.
So I chose to ship to family in the lower 48. I also did not pay shipping insurance ($2.99).
Of note, although Shein accepts major credit cards and PayPal. I paid with PayPal, as I always do for stores outside the US. PayPal has a strict policy and tends to favor customers in cases of dispute.
You’ll notice from my order above that the sizes of clothes I ordered range from XS to M. This is because Shein clothing size is, in my opinion, all over the board.
I looked at each item’s measurement (in inches) before deciding which size to order.
For reference, I wear an XS or S (32”, 26”, 36”). It is a good idea to have a general idea of your measurement to facilitate your shopping decision.
1. Foldover Knot Asymmetric Shoulder Polka Dot Dress $20
I ordered this asymmetrical dress because it looked gorgeous. With a 4.5-star rating from over 20 people, I figured the odds were in my favor.
I don’t attend a lot of special events, but I thought this would be a beautiful piece to have on hand and to review for you.
Polka dot is a classic that never goes out of style. Similarly, the asymmetrical cut combined with layers of ruffles adds a modern touch to the outfit.
I order this Shein dress in size XS for a whopping $20 🙂 Exact XS measurements in inches: Bust: 31.9″, Waist: 27.2″, Hips: 35.4″, Length: 47.2″.
My only gripe with this Shein dress was how high the slit was. From the way the gown wraps around the model, you would think there would be a little more fabric to cover your skin.
Nope! I ended up using a safety pin to shorten the slit to avoid accidentally flashing strangers.
As expected, the fabric is a thin polyester material that works great in the summer heat. With all the layers and shoulder action, you’ll need patience to put on this dress.

2. V Cut Geo Print Slit Side Curved Hem Dress $18
Goodness! I’ve worn this dress three times already! It arrived wrinkled, and I happen to conveniently forget to press this Shein curved hem dress all three times I wore it.
However, I don’t expect to have any problems with ironing the dress. Or maybe I’ll steam it since the fabric is lightweight.
I had the toughest time deciding on which one of the two colors to buy.
All 60+ reviews on this 4.5+ star dress were right on the money. The fabric belt also allows you to cinch your waist for a more defined figure.

3. Lace Hollow Out Cami Dress $29
I ordered this dress because I saw a similar style on Nordstrom that I was obsessed with. But for over $400, I was not ready to drop that amount of money on a dress.
After looking through the Nordstrom website, I found this ASTR dress on Nordstrom for $89.
Then when I saw these two styles on Shein (this and this), I instantly knew it was meant to be.

Out of the plastic wrap, I had no hopes for this dress. As soon as I put it on and threw on a belt, I was ecstatic. The fabric of this dress feels more substantial than the typical Shein dress.
The cami dress was a perfect fit, and the length was just right. As a personal preference, I try to spend no more than $20 – $25 on Shein clothing.
But I made a little exception for this dress. It worked out well in this instance because I ended up with a designer look-alike for less.

4. Knot Front Lantern Sleeve Shirt Dress $23
This tie-front dress is not a style that I would typically wear. But I decided to step outside my comfort zone and try something new.
This is an example of how the affordable pieces on Shein make it easy to rock stylish and trendy clothes.
I will update this post with photos of me wearing this tie-front dress once I have them. It is lightweight, breathable and great for summer. And can be worn in two different ways!

5. Asymmetrical Hem Faux Pearl Detail Dress $20
Can’t say no to a wardrobe must-have: a little black dress (LBD). I needed to refresh my closet with a new LBD.
Plus, I needed an extra item to get my order up to the $100 mark for free express shipping.
Since I’ve overworn the two black dresses in my closet, I decided to complete my shopping with a Shein dress.
It’s no surprise that SheIn carries a spectacular selection of dresses. Page after page, all I saw were dresses I needed in my closet.
I contemplated getting this, this or this. The pleats on the side and pearl beads are the perfect touch of elegance.
For only $20, this was worth the money spent. I also love the quality of the fabric as it has some weight and substance to the quality.

DO I RECOMMEND SHOPPING AT SHEIN?
It depends on what you’re looking for. If you would like to have the option of returning pieces you’re not in love with, it might be worth it to invest the $2.99 in insurance.
That said, you might be able to find similar or exact pieces on Amazon Prime with free shipping + return.
However, Amazon prices are likely to be higher-priced because Amazon gets its cut.
All five pieces in my order worked out just fine. But the same was not the case for previous Shein orders. I usually have one or two pieces that end up going to the donation pile.
Follow the shopping tips above to have a better chance of loving everything you order from Shein.
Final thoughts: Shein is a great one-stop shop for trendy and affordable fashion that might otherwise break the bank.
As with most things in life, there is a risk associated with anything we do.
If you’re looking for on-trend, affordable clothes and staking your bets, then definitely give Shein a try.
If you’re looking for long-lasting, staple pieces that you will wear for seasons and years to come, you’re better off shopping at reliable retailers like Nordstrom, Ann Taylor, Loft, Banana Republic, and Talbots.

How long does SheIn take to ship?
According to the official SheIn website, your order should be processed for shipping between 1-3 days. But due to the current global situation, friends and readers of the blog have said their order (including those that paid for Express shipping) took almost a month to get to the US (more here).
Is SheIn good?
This depends on who you ask. The quality of SheIn clothing is good but cannot be compared to pieces from premium retailers. That said, I’ve had great success with their clothing. Stick with items that have a lot of customer reviews.
Is SheIn reliable?
If you had asked me the question a few years ago, it would have been a resounding YES. Right now, I’d say they are 70% reliable. In the past, you could pinpoint exactly when your order would arrive. Let’s up it gets better soon.
Does SheIn run small?
Yes, most items from SheIn run small. I almost have to size up to get the best fit. Make sure to ALWAYS check the clothing dimension as it changes from one product to the next. And read customer reviews too.
Does SheIn have free returns?
Yes, SheIn has free returns but only on your first order. Every subsequent return after that incurs a $7.99 shipping fee. Now that’s a good deal for international shipping but I’ve heard that it’s a struggle actually getting your money back. I donate whatever I can’t wear.

What are peoples experiences with SHEIN lingerie? More so plus size
I’m about a 14-16 AU and wear a 14DD bra. I’m not liking any of the plus size lingerie, but I’m worried the XL lingerie will be way too small! I’ve looked at some of the reviews and the people who are wearing a XL are half my size
Are the sizes usually generous for lingerie?
I was surprised at some of the reviews. I have been ordering from Shein for years and I love it. You have to pay attention to the size guide. I’m am 5’3″ and 198 lbs and everything I order fits me. I also order clothes for my daughter and granddaughters, who are smaller than me and we have no problems.

I Have bought from shein and i love all the dresses i am from Sweden and i was always afrid to buy at on-line shops because the dress didn’t look the same as on the model s so i took a chance to buy from shein with taht in mind but i was surprised when the dresses arrived they looked accsacly like the dress on the models shien used

Hi Melissa, thanks for the sweet words. I’m glad you found these tips helpful. To answer your question, I can’t think of any other way to know if these SheIn dresses are reliable/good quality. BTW, you picked out great dresses. I’m gravitating towards the first dress as I’m a little concerned that the fabric of the second dress (the satin one) might be a little thin.
SHEIN steals designs and replicates products from smaller clothing companies and lesser known designer and then sells them for pennies on the dollar. They then ignore anyone who says anything. DO NOT keep supporting fast fashion companies that are leeching off smaller companies. Not to mention the quality of these clothes are equivalent if not WORSE than Forever21.

I have purchased 2 white dresses from Shein Sg, after carefully zoom-looked at the 2 dresses, to ascertain the 2 white dresses are not “transparent”.
I have online purchased white dresses from other websites, no problem and am happy with my purchases.
When I received the 2 white dresses from Shein Sg, I am shocked that material is rather inferior and after trying the 2 Shein white dresses, they are almost “Transparent” and my few friends have the Same Opinion too. All my few friends suggested that I should return the 2 Shein white dresses.
I wrote to Shein Sg, again to my horror, Shein Sg wants me to courier back to Hong Kong and not Singapore, on top of that Shein Sg wants me to take photo wearing the 2 Shein white dresses, then Shein Sg disputes that I wore a dark chamisole. Is Shein Sg expecting me to wear my skin tone bra and takes photo of wearing the 2 Shein White dresses. This is Totally Dis-respectful, and annoying.
Now Shein Sg states that they do not have any Singapore Warehouse or return address.
This is totally ridiculous.
Conclusion: DO NOT Buy from Shein Sg, unless you are very sure of the material and the returning address.

Couple of years back, I’ve been sent items from SheIn .. and for what they cost, I do think they can be pretty flattering and stylish. But delivery times are long.. and it can be hit or miss with sizing.

I ordered three dress one among that was quite big to my height even after opting the correct size so I returned and money was refunded. From today may be 5-6 months back this happened, I didn’t place order after that and the money in the wallet I couldn’t widraw too.. But the thing is this Shein app as well as other 58 apps is getting baned in our country INDIA for some issue. After knowing this I placed a order today and almost China based apps are banned now to check I tried opening tiktok but I couldn’t now I have placed order will I get the product delivered to my place… ?

Hi Srushti, thanks for stopping by. I live in the US so it’s hard to say how the ban of SheIn in India will affect your order. If all else fails, you can try using a VPN Chrome Extension (like this one) to change your location so you can access the SheIn website from India. All the best!

I’ve been able to wash everything just fine. If you end up getting the lace dress, you might want to but it in a wash bag (I got mine from Nordstrom) before tossing it in the washer/dryer.

It is supposed to arrive June 6th which is in less than a month. But still, if you live in Canada, it will take a long time (and I chose express shipping). And also, I really like the dresses you chose; there super cute 🙂 When I will get my package, I will keep you guys update and see if I will shop at Shein again. Hey! Did u end up receiving ur order? I ask cuz I’m in Canada too and I never received my order… but the profile shows that it was delivered! Extremely disappointed!!!!
This is the worst. I bought 7 items and wanted to return 5 of them because they were not as shown, too big or just really cheap. I did what the site said, started the return, selected the items I wanted to return and it said next, print your return label. Well, it never popped up and I can’t get a hold of anyone. Now when I go back in, the 5 items I selected to return are no longer showing up so I can’t start a new return.There is no way on the shein site to speak to anyone. It says you can start a chat or ticket but that is not available either. I have wasted more time trying to return then I did placing the order. If anyone knows how I can reach a live person, PLEASE HELP ME. ALL I WANT IS THE RETURN ADDRESS. I’ll pay for it myself but I can’t even get that. The rules say do not return to the address on the package. I wouldn’t mind ordering again but I’ve now lost interest because of this mess. I will never order clothes again because the sizing is off but I would be interested in shoes, bags or jewelry but sorry, I can’t deal with someone I can’t get in touch with. Also the link you posted to a previous commenter takes you to the site that does nothing. When you send the so called chat, you get an automated response, not one from a real person. I’m very disappointed.

All my orders are past the return window so I can’t look on my end to grab that information for you 🙁 Their Instagram account is very active, I recommend commenting on their most recent photo asking for their return address for US orders (it’s different for each country). Hi Emily, my orders arrived in about a month with standard shipping. But I recently heard from a friend that placed an order on the 20th of last month with Express shipping. Her order was delayed and now expected to arrive on the 12th of this month! With the current situation, I’d suggest giving yourself a one-month buffer for the swimsuit to arrive if you order directly from their website. I purchased Four Tops. Three were really nice one not so much. Three of the tops were good quality and one looked very cheap. The prices were very reasonable. So like you I will keep three and donate one. I purchased a dress and it is very cute. The dress is definitely a keeper. I checked the sizing guide very carefully like you suggested. I will definitely shop at Shein again.

It honestly depends. They use different fabrics for each piece. I’d recommend reading the reviews if any. It’s more of a hit than a miss but you just never know.
My daughter found a swimsuit she wants from Shein. I’m always skeptical when it comes to online ordering so I did a little research and came across this review. So helpful and reassuring! But I’m wondering, have you tried any of the swimsuits? How’s the sizing? Quality of the material?
Hi Amanda, thanks for reaching out. I don’t believe I’ve bought swimsuits from Shein yet. I bet the sizing might be on the smaller side. I suggest reading customers’ reviews if they are available on the swimsuit your daughter wants. Also, you might want to consider the situation happening right now as your package might be delayed if it ships from China (or affected countries). Alternatively, check Amazon to see if the same swimsuit is available on SheIn’s Amazon store or from a similar retailer. That way, you can use Amazon Prime to get it quickly and return/exchange should you need to. Hope this helps!

I´ve never tried Shein before, but after using Wish that is also from China I got so disapointed that I don´t feel comfortable buying from chinese online retail stores with “that kind” of “we sell fast fashion cheap clothes” modus operandi.
I´d rather hear from other kind of bussines that care more about the quality and fair trade, what do you think?
You raise a very good point, Elizabeth. I think it all comes down to personal preference and product quality and fair trade are factors that should be considered.
Similar to Elizabeth’s concern, when looking into Shein clothing did you find anything “suspicious” when it came to how the clothing was made or how the conditions in the factories are?
I’ve ordered from Shein before, I found they tend to run small. I think I gave the tops away to my sisters. I really like the round hem dress on you, you chose the perfect color!

I have shopped online at this site as well. I lived in China before, so the clothing is typical of what is available at the markets there. The sizes do run small, the hems fall out easy and are always slightly shorter than the “normal” shirts. But, for my daughters, the clothes are perfect because they change their minds so fast.

I have no opinion as I have never heard of Shein before. That being said there will always be different experiences with any store, some people will eat at restaurant and say it’s the best ever while others will say it stinks.

But you’re right, some company’s make you pay custom fees but SheIn covers those costs (at least that’s my understanding). You can also try ordering from their Amazon store to give it a try.
